Diagnostic Scanner Updates: What Happens When They Run Out?
Most scanners come with a fixed period of diagnostic scanner updates, and when it ends, many workshop owners worry the tool will stop working. Usually it doesn’t, but what you can still do depends on the scanner. Here’s what to expect, and how to decide whether to renew, upgrade or trade in.
The short answer
On most professional scanners, the tool keeps working with the software it already has when its diagnostic scanner updates expire. What you lose is coverage for newer vehicles, new functions and software fixes. Some online features can also stop. The rules differ by model, so send us your serial number and we’ll tell you exactly where yours stands.
What still works when diagnostic scanner updates expire
- Reading and clearing fault codes on vehicles your installed software already covers
- Live data on those vehicles
- Service resets and functions included in your current software version
- Basic OBD2 functions on OBD2-compliant vehicles
What you lose without diagnostic scanner updates
- Newer models and model years. Vehicles released after your last update may not be recognised, or only at basic OBD2 level.
- New functions. Service resets, coding routines and procedures added in later software versions.
- Fixes. Corrections to problems found in earlier software.
- Some online features. Functions that connect to the internet, such as online coding or remote diagnostics, may need an active subscription. Ask us about your model.
This matters in South Africa because new brands and models keep arriving on our roads. A scanner that hasn’t had diagnostic scanner updates for a year or two may not recognise some of the newest cars coming into your workshop.
Which ThinkCar scanners include lifetime diagnostic scanner updates?
Some scanners in our range list lifetime software updates, so the question never comes up. Others include a fixed period.
| Scanner | Software updates | Price |
|---|---|---|
| ThinkOBD 100 | Lifetime free | R1,149 |
| ThinkOBD 500 | Lifetime free | R1,799 |
| ThinkScan 662 | Lifetime free | R4,599 |
| Thinktool Reader 7 | Lifetime | R7,305.38 |

| ThinkScan Max 2 | Lifetime free, no subscription required | R9,800 |
| ThinkDiag | 1 year included | R1,999 |
| ThinkDiag2 | 1 year of full software included | R3,599 |
For workshop tablets, including the ThinkScan 672, 689 and 689BT and the Thinktool Lite, Expert and Master series, ask us for the update terms on the model you’re looking at. You can compare all OBD2 scanners here.
Should you renew diagnostic scanner updates or upgrade?
Renew when:
- The scanner still covers most of the vehicles you work on
- The hardware is in good condition and runs well
- Renewal costs a lot less than a new scanner with similar functions
Upgrade when:
- It struggles with newer vehicles. Some newer vehicles use a faster protocol called CAN-FD. The ThinkDiag2, ThinkScan 672 (GM 2020–2024), ThinkScan Max 2 and ThinkScan 689 all list CAN-FD support.
- You need functions your current tool never had, such as bidirectional tests or ECU coding
- Renewal costs close to the price of a new entry-level scanner
Upgrading doesn’t mean starting from zero. We take trade-ins on all brands, so your old scanner can go towards the new one.
Buying a second-hand scanner? Check this first
A cheap second-hand scanner can be a bargain or an expensive paperweight. Diagnostic scanners are activated against a serial number and a user account. The ThinkDiag, for example, is activated by registering an account in its app and entering an activation code. If the original owner’s registration can’t be moved to you, you may not be able to get diagnostic scanner updates. In some cases you may not be able to use the tool at all.
Before you pay:
- Ask the seller for the serial number and send it to us. Launch and ThinkCar serial numbers can be verified through official channels.
- Ask when the updates expire.
- Ask whether the seller can release the scanner from their account.
- Be wary of tools imported outside official channels. Grey imports often show errors such as “IP is Limited” or “Region not authorized”, and carry no local warranty.
Whether a registration can be transferred depends on the brand and model. Check with us before you pay, not after.
Why where you buy matters
Buying from an authorised distributor means official software updates, a full manufacturer warranty and lifetime technical support from a local team. Launch SA is the sole authorised distributor of Launch and ThinkCar diagnostic equipment in South Africa. Read more about the hidden dangers of grey import diagnostic tools.
Frequently asked questions
Will my scanner stop working when the subscription ends?
Usually not. Most professional scanners keep working with the software already installed. You lose new vehicle coverage, new functions and fixes, and some online features may stop. Send us your serial number to check your model.
Do ThinkCar scanners have lifetime free updates?
Some do. The ThinkOBD 100, ThinkOBD 500, ThinkScan 662, ThinkScan Max 2 and Thinktool Reader 7 and Reader 8 list lifetime updates. The ThinkDiag and ThinkDiag2 include one year of software.
Can I update a scanner I bought second-hand?
It depends on whether the original registration can be released or transferred. Before you buy, send us the serial number and we’ll check it.
How much does it cost to renew diagnostic scanner updates?
Renewal pricing depends on the model. WhatsApp us your scanner’s model and serial number and we’ll quote you.
Can I trade in a scanner whose updates have expired?
Yes. We take trade-ins on all brands. Send us the details and we’ll give you a trade-in value towards a new scanner.
Not sure where your scanner stands?
WhatsApp us the model and serial number on +27 74 855 5555, and we’ll tell you what it still covers and what your options are. Or come and see the latest scanners at our Germiston showroom.
